Until recently, individuals with in the State of Washington with felony convictions who served prison sentences were required to complete conditions of their sentence. These terms could extend for several years and often necessitated settlement of legal-financial obligations.
In 2021, bipartisan efforts in the state produced a bill signed into law that automatically restored voter eligibility to those upon release from prison. This untied enfranchisement from ability to pay and a host of other complications linked to sentencing. At least 20,000 individuals are projected to benefit.
However, this figure may not include many individuals with prior convictions. Many potential beneficiaries are unaware. Others may be uncertain about their eligibility. Free Our Vote and its partners are filling this gap, informing returning citizens through a mix of different messaging platforms, including mailers and social media, about their newly gained voting rights.
